Author Q& A
- What books have most influenced your life?
The Bible has had the most influence in my life although that was not always the case. Growing up in the south (Bible Belt) and belonging to a super religious family, all I heard during my childhood and teen years was how I was doomed to spend eternity in Hell because I was, as Conservative Christian Southerners would say, “a sinner.” It was not until I became an adult and better understood God’s purpose for me that I began to recognize the Bible’s practicality. Biblical parables provide wisdom, advice, and inspiration that help me navigate the complexities of everyday life from others who have already “been there and experienced that.”
Other books that have inspired me are Seven Habits of Highly Effective People written by Stephen R. Covey, The E-Myth written by Michael Gerber, and Think and Grow Rich written by Napoleon Hill.
- You mentioned that the Bible had a positive influence in your life. If that is the case, why would you write Your Five-Star Plan for Rich Bitch Status? I mean, wouldn’t some of your content, e.g., adult language and heavy usage of the word “Bitch,” be offensive to God?
To be honest, I didn’t think about it. I guess you could say the word “bitch” and all of the other naughty words I used may be offensive to Him. However, I am inclined to believe that He is dealing with more important issues.
- Why did you write My Five-Star Plan for Rich Bitch Status?
When I first heard the report that the median net worth of single Black women in America was $5, I was livid….and ashamed. And then, shortly after that report was published, another study concluded that Black women spend more than $7.5 million annually on beauty products. The reports make it seem like we are only interested in looking rich instead of BEING rich. Now, don’t get me wrong because there is nothing wrong with looking good but when we spend everything we have to “look good” we are forfeiting our rights to a secure financial future. Will Smith said, “We spend money to buy things to impress people we don’t like,” and I agree wholeheartedly. Why are we more obsessed with impressing people we don’t like more than we are concerned about increasing our net worth and securing our futures?
Then it hit me. Most of us don’t know how to get started. We haven’t been taught from someone who has been in our shoes. So I decided to tell my story and share my financial journey. I know what it’s like to look good while struggling to pay bills. I have carried a Louis Vuitton purse with absolutely no money in the bank. As a matter of fact, I probably bounced a couple of checks to get the purse. I lived that reality for years. It took a long time for me to learn that real financial success means you afford designer clothes and have money in the bank. I mean, if you look like a million bucks, wouldn’t you feel like ‘The Shit’ if your net worth was at least a million bucks? If you carry a $3,000 purse, shouldn’t you at least have $3,000 in the bank somewhere not designated for paying bills?
Your Five-Star Plan for Rich Bitch Status gives women who want to know how to get started on a plan for financial success an actual plan to get started. I encourage my readers to adopt financial habits that will allow them to not only look rich but BE RICH.
- Your book has two sections that seem unrelated. Why did you do that?
Part I of Your Five-Star Plan for Rich Bitch Status can be described as your personal guide to eliminating debt and your debt mindset. Part I is filled with tables, charts, quizzes and worksheets to help you adopt better habits and assist you as you begin a more responsible financial journey. Part II of Your Five-Star Plan for Rich Bitch Status describes the life of Phoebe Lux and her journey to financial independence.
I wrote the book in two parts because I wanted to give my readers a choice. If you are studious and like do-it-yourself type books, then you can use the tools provided in Part I to create a plan to get started on your financial journey. If you learn better through surrogacy, then reading about Phoebe’s financial journey in Part II will probably be your favorite section.
- Are the experiences described in the book based on someone you know or events in your life?
I have written about myself and others. Financial journeys are not identical. Everyone has a financial journey to take and financial lessons to learn. I am not proposing a single solution that will fix everything in 30 days or less. Instead, I am offering a practical snapshot of what your life could be. I am giving you a plan on how to achieve the life you deserve. If Rich Bitch status is your goal, then Your Five-Star Plan for Rich Bitch Status is the book you need to read.
